What Is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese word meaning, “Universal Life Energy”. The name comes from the Japanese words’ “rei” meaning spirit, and “ki” meaning energy and is pronounced “Ray-key”. This life force energy exists within each of us and in all living beings. It nourishes us and gives us life. This healing method is very ancient and dates back to India at least 2500 years ago. Dr. Mikao Usui was a Japanese Christian scholar who rediscovered Reiki in 1850. He had been trying to discover the mystery of how Jesus healed the sick. After searching for answers for many years he had an extraordinary spiritual experience which gave him the information for administering Reiki. This is now known as the “Usui System of Natural Healing”.
Reiki has been designated as a Japanese “National Treasure”. For many years it was a closely guarded secret and never left the country until an amazing woman, Hawayo Takata, brought it to Hawaii around 1940. In fact, Mrs. Takata was made the Grand Master of Reiki by Dr. Hayashi who had taught her how to practice Reiki on herself as well as others. He awarded this honor to her and asked her to share this amazing healing method on many others prior to his own death.
Mrs. Takata then returned to Hawaii. She created a healing center where she practiced and taught Reiki for the next 30 years. In 1973, she also carried the teachings of Reiki across to the U.S. and Canada. Before she died in 1980, she had initiated 22 Reiki Masters and hundreds of practitioners. We owe a great indebtedness to her for the effort she expensed in sharing this beautiful healing modality now available to the whole world.
As a Reiki practitioner, I have been taught how to channel the Universal Life Energy and offer it to my clients by the gentle placing on of my hands on or above the body if needed. My clients have expressed a sense of positive changes in their emotional attitudes finding new goals and priorities emerging into their consciousness. It induces deep relaxation and stress reduction and can accelerate healing after surgery or illness.
Also, Reiki will vitalize all forms of plant, fish, and animals as well. I especially love working with pets as they are so receptive to the wonderful healing energy. Reiki has a vibrational “frequency” that is readily understood and appreciated by animals.
Reiki is only capable of doing good. I know from personal experience. I have been a practitioner for over 20 years and am a certified Usui Reiki Master.
