Conquering Jealousy
Why should we have to experience Jealousy? Some people are able to avoid it effortlessly while others struggle in torment! It is an internal nagging of doubt, confusion, fear, and pain! Something very “other” than what we want to feel! So where is this coming from and how can we avoid it’s grasp!
In early Christian scripture it states, “Thou shall not covet thy neighbor’s wife”. The Commandment was obviously recognizing that “wanting” what doesn’t belong to us is not correct behavior! Identifiable concepts of jealousy are talent, home, children, relationships, appearance, wealth, etc. We all know the list can go on forever!
This is essentially the point at which we abdicate our own self-esteem by coveting another’s possessions or achievements. Are we lacking so much self-worth and confidence that we don’t realize that we are capable of having our own “wonderfulness”? Rarely, do we really want exactly what someone else has anyway! And, in truth, we only see the outside appearances of what other people are willing to show to others!
At this point we have the opportunity to discover what rendition of this do we really want! Have we considered this before? Is this a new inkling of some hidden desire in our subconscious? Are we willing to make the adjustments and work very hard to accomplish this success! Realizing that the people who have attained what we want have put in much time and energy into achieving their goals. Maybe more time and energy than we are willing to invest!! Would the sacrifices chosen be acceptable to you? If extra money has been involved as an asset, there are many responsibilities and concerns that accompany this! They are not all desirable and pleasant due to the fear factor of loss and extra responsibilities involved!
What I have taught in my Creative Life Classes is that this is actually an excellent tool! It “chunks down” the issues that we need to examine as possible hidden desires. How we emotionally respond to others gives us needed clues to what we want or need to do! This is the upside of jealousy! It identifies those things we want to aspire to ourselves, instead of just lulling around hoping something great will suddenly happen to…. or for us!
